The Benefits Of Going Back To School As An Adult

Has it been a while since you last stepped into a classroom? Okay, let’s admit it, maybe it’s been more than a while. But that’s all about to change with your recent decision to enroll in additional schooling!

Yes, you’ve made the exciting decision to go back to school later in your career or life path. Maybe you’ve been dreaming of a career change, or perhaps you’re trying to get a leg up in your current position and have your eyes on a promotion!

No matter what’s motivating you, you’ve made a wise decision. So don’t wrinkle your nose at the term “mature student”.

Going back to school as an adult comes with loads of advantages!

1. You know what you want, and you’re ready to get it

You’ve already spent a good number of years in the workforce, so you know what you want and what you DEFINITELY do not. You’ve got the advantage of clarity and confidence, so be sure to use that to your own advantage.

Your life story and your experiences to date (probably not all easy) have helped you to become someone who can make decisions quicker. You’ve gotten to know yourself – so now you can pursue your real passion!

2. You’ve got a head start compared to your peers

Yet another advantage of age (and experience). You’ve got a great head start on the rest of your peers, who are likely straight out of secondary or postsecondary school.

What’s your advantage?

  • You likely have already acquired a lot of life experiences. If you decide to go back to school, you can bring these life experiences to your studies and enrich your overall learning experience.
  • You’re undoubtedly more responsible at this age than when you were 19. Being more responsible directly correlates to how seriously you’re taking your studies. This is especially true if you’re the one paying for your education this time around (a difference you may have when compared to your younger counterparts).
  • As opposed to your younger classmates, you’re more likely to have a better appreciation for academia. Your younger counterparts may view this as a stepping stone to their future, whereas you see it as an opportunity for continued growth and expansion of your current self. This positive attitude towards school allows you to fully engage with your education.

3. You’re improving your employability

Don’t forget one of the main reasons you’re back at school: advancing your education will lead to advancements in your career path. It’s a simple equation, but it packs a punch! If you’re able to advance your career, you’re likely going to be able to expand your earning potential, and optimize your monetary spend on your program. Plus, more money means whatever you want it to mean! Options to begin your own business, spend more time with your family, or to prioritize “luxury” things in your life that you currently aren’t able to.
